A Vegetarian Lifestyle

Call me crazy if you want to but I am seriously considering a partial vegetarian lifestyle. I'm thinking of doing it 3-4 days a week. Paige came home from school today and said, "Mom, we aren't supposed to eat very much meat and we are supposed to eat a lot of bread." I didn't believe it. I have come to the mind set that meat is very important and bread isn't good for you at all. So I refreshed myself on what the food pyramid says:Meat is right up there next to treats. Of course you are supposed to have more meat than treats but it's still at the top. So why do I have the mind set that you need a meat at every meal? Doesn't it say in the scriptures to eat meat sparingly. Why haven't I thought about that a little more? I'm going to give it a try. I have a sister-in-law and a good friend who live or have lived this lifestyle so I will see if I can get some yummy (and easy) recipes that will make it a little easier to try this transition. I want so bad to have a healthy family. I want to be healthy and feel healthy. I want to work out and have it work. But I don't think that can happen when I'm not eating the right way for my body. I'm still going to do 1 treat day a week, probably on my non-vegetarian days. Do you know anyone who has tried this? Have you tried it? I'm kind of excited.

I tried being vegetarian for a month. I loved it! I was thinking about making it a permanent thing, but in some cases (family dinners, when you're on vacation, etc) it's really hard to not eat meat. But everything I cook for myself is still vegetarian. I feel better and I feel like I know what I'm putting into my body. Plus it's less of a temptation to stop at Wendy's on the way home from work when all I could eat there would be a salad. :) Just make sure you still get plenty of protein!

i was vegetarian and vegan for about a year, I also didnt eat any sugars either. I never felt better in my life, and was my skinniest ever.
But its a hard lifestyle to maintain. I did student teaching and got pregnant and haven't been as diligent about it.
But i still cook almost every meal as a vegetarian meal, with lots of fresh veggies. I also try to always start the day with a green smoothie. Fast, delicious and good for you.
I started this all out by doing something called Daniel's Challenge. I have the book and a cookbook from it, come talk to me if you want to check it out!
good luck, its hard at first, but soooo worth it.

Jeff and I were vegetarians when I was pregnant with Carson, because meat made me sick. Jeff loved it! We eat meat now, but definately not as much. I too feel like eating it "sparingly" is the best option.

Instead of planing meals around meat, we plan them around other things.
Monday Night- Potato Night
Tuesday Night- Rice Night
Wednesday- Noodle Night
Thursday- Bread Night
Friday is fish night, becaus we are trying to eat more fish.

Some nights we include meat, but most nights we don't. We eat more veggies this way and it's easier for me to plan meals.

Good luck!

Oh do it if you can!! I've always wanted to be vegan. Only because I hear how awesome you feel when you eat that way. But I am SO not self disciplined enough, nor do I have the know how to pull it off. I just watched a video called Food Matters. It was fascinating and I think I'm going to do close to a raw food diet. I just want about 50-70 percent of my foods to be real...and whole. I just want to feel good. :)

If you feel it would be best for you, then I say go for it! Adding in lots & lots of vegetables and good-quality plant proteins (nuts, beans, avocados & dark leafy greens) is a great way to start. Let me know if you want recipes.

Have you ever looked into "Eating clean"? Tosca Reno has a good book. You could start there...
